I have been tagged for THE ALPHABET MEME by my dear friend DANNY at his fabulous movie site GETAFILM

I don’t always get into the middle of these things. But for DANNY I’ll go a long way. He’s one of the best friends this fiery headturner ever had.

So I actually have two versions. One is because I did one up very quickly when I arrived home and had next to no sleep. The other is the proper version.

For the rules, please go back to GETAFILM and refer. I don’t have the time, patience or inclination for that jazz. Don’t really give two lovely Fs about them.

EVER.

But the point, of course, is for the meme in question to be a showcase for all of your favourite films.

I guess I’m essentially a rebellious nonconformist. I suppose the world will just have to live with that.

I don’t really like to tag other people either because they may not be willing or interested in participating.

But if (for example), the lovely and extremely talented MARCY from BECAUSE I SAW THE FILM or MR. JOE VALDEZ from THIS DISTRACTED GLOBE wanted to get in on the action, that would be awesome.

All right all ready…

Here are my two versions. One totally wrong. One totally right.

  1. Fantastic list, Miranda. There are so many films on your list that I have yet to see. I don’t think I can top your list (seeing that I chose the first film that came to mind for each alphabet), but I tried.

I did the meme a few days ago, which can be found here. I’m glad to see that we both have Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Hannah and Her Sisters, and The Philadelphia Story on our lists.

  2. Thank you, Marcy.

See, I rarely do this kind of thing and I basically only tried it out because DANNY was involved. But it would make sense to check and see if the people in question had actually done a list before you tagged them, right???

Ha ha. Next time I’ll know better.

Also: just for the record, that defiantly amusing retort (”Let’s see if you can top that, suckers”) was just for effect. You are one of my prized regulars and I wouldn’t offend you for the world. CP does suffer considerably from your absence, my girl. But I am aware that your education is very important.

    So I won’t even think of protesting…

Well, your list is fabulous. VERY PLEASED to see that you chose THE GODFATHER PART II (OF COURSE), THE KILLING FIELDS, NETWORK, ORDINARY PEOPLE and THE VERDICT. I almost went with several of those myself.

    As for mine…

I think – to a very great degree – that our tastes are quite similar in many respects.

I feel strongly (if you HAVEN’T seen them) that you would really love: GILDA, THE ENGLISH PATIENT, THE THIRD MAN, THE TURNING POINT, THE WINGS OF THE DOVE, DARLING, DANGEROUS LIAISONS, FRANCES, QUEEN MARGOT and ROMEO IS BLEEDING.

I would be VERY intrigued to know what you thought of BODY HEAT and THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING.

Maybe some day you’ll review a few of these?

Regardless of my tagging you when it was totally unnecessary, I’m always tremendously pleased when you stop by.

The light’s always on for you, girl…

  3. let’s see you top that suckers

*sigh* sorry m. but i had to take off the gloves… ;)

  4. Oh, HOLY CHRIST…

You’re right, glim. Totally tops my achievement.

    IN SPADES.

What I’d like to know is: who the hell are the people that voted for him?

Is it the end of the world all ready?

Must be a sign from above….

  5. and if you’re not familiar with this blog…..

  6. No offense taken! I was just playing along. But you do have a wonderful list.

Admittedly, I couldn’t stand watching Husbands and Wives. Woody Allen can be amazing, but I’ve never been a fan of handheld cameras, regardless of its intentions. I do realize the film has some great performances (give or take Juliette Lewis) and a script that only Woody Allen can write, but that film really made me dizzy.

I need to re-watch The English Patient. I remember not totally loving it, but now I realize I don’t have the clearest memory of the film anyway. It does seem like the kind of epic that I’d embrace. And I remember it looked and felt a lot like Out of Africa, a film that I happen to adore. At this moment in time, I wouldn’t mind giving it a second chance.

My to-watch list grows ever longer…

  7. Tremendous list!

Believe me, I’m not out to find memes all over the place and I don’t always participate, but this one was pretty quick and dirty so I gave it a shot. Glad you had some fun with it and made it your own. Your words are too kind…

So Atonement shoots up to the top of the A’s in less than a year! Truly it must be one of your favorites, although I guess a lot of “A” films don’t actually fit the “A” rule because they START with the word “A”…make sense, haha?

We share The Empire Strikes Back – hooray!

Notes on a Scandal – I missed your fandom of that movie, although it was two years ago. That must be the only movie in which you can tolerate Blanchett? Is my memory correct?

I was middling between Jurassic Park (which I picked), Jaws (which you picked), and Jerry Maguire (which we both like).

I was going to do Malcolm X – clever girl! Seems like everybody was forced to pick X-Men because there was no other choice, but you went and did your own thing. I should have done that.

And no post of yours would be complete, or nearly as enjoyable, without the shaking of the blonde mane…:-)

  8. glim – as a reader, as a resource (for practically anything) and a person – you are UNBEATABLE, my darling boy.

I’m going to bookmark this. Hell, I may even add it to the blogroll.

    Thanks, sweetheart….

  9. Marcy, as much as I ADORE HUSBANDS & WIVES (think it’s flat out the BEST film WOODY’S ever made – and seeing as he’s my all time favourite director that’s genuinely saying something), I do agree with you about that bloody cinema verite doc style hand held camera stuff.

That can be VERY annoying. In some cases (even if people find the story compelling), the motion sickness wins out.

It didn’t bother me much. But I can totally understand how it could either drive someone crazy or make them feel ill. It can definitely damage your enjoyment of a film that you may very well have loved.

I adore OUT OF AFRICA as well. So beautiful and so tragic. Just like TEP.

I worshipped TEP when it was released. That’s my kind of film. Saw it seven times. WAS TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY OBSESSED WITH IT. Its impact has NEVER faded for me. I understand that movie and the relationships so well.

But people do seem to have VERY extreme reactions to it with very little middle ground. I’ve even heard of individuals revisiting it and loathing it much later when they initially loved it – and vice versa.

I think it’s gorgeous and haunting. Every time RALPH takes KRISTIN – all wrapped in white – out of that cave, sobbing so hard he can barely stand, my heart just STOPS.

I hope that if you ever review any of the films from the meme that I thought you would like that you let me know. I’d be genuinely fascinated by your opinions.

You’ve got a great mind, girl.

    Definitely…

  10. Danny, thank you so very much.

Naw, I’m not overly kind. Just honest – and I like to give credit where it’s due.

But if I’m fond of a person then compliments do spring from my lips (or pen or keyboard as the case may be) rather easily.

Well, like everything else that you choose it’s all very arbitrary. I could easily have picked THE APARTMENT, ALL ABOUT EVE, AMERICAN GRAFFITI or either version of ALFIE instead of ATONEMENT.

But I passionately LOVE that film. Not only that but I had a recent conversation with someone about ATONEMENT. So I guess it was on my mind anyway.

Yeah, I noticed that we both had THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK after the fact. I saw it then forgot it on a conscious level. But it must have stuck with me because there it is…

VERY GOOD. NOTES ON A SCANDAL is ONE of the only films that I can avidly tolerate Ms. Blanchett in. Also liked her in VERONICA GUERIN, OSCAR & LUCINDA and her very small role in THE SHIPPING NEWS.

    That’s all…

But I genuinely adore NOAS due to the illustrious JUDI DENCH’S brilliance.

Yeah, I could very easily have gone with JERRY MAGUIRE. I’ve never seen JURASSIC PARK.

Thanks for the MALCOLM X kudos. X is tough. Tried to get a list going at IMDB. Guess I wasn’t pushing the right buttons or accessing the correct material. In actuality, MX ISN’T one of my personal favourites. But it’s still a very good film and I had to put something there.

Well, my KIM BASINGER hair is my trademark. Never gonna cut it.

I have Leo rising and you know how vain lions are about their manes.

My hat (and everything else I have) is off to you, my sweet. Thanks for tagging me.

It was a whole lot of awesomely declared fun…

    You’re the best, Danny…
