THE 20 NASTIEST POP CULTURE VILLAINS

Just continuing on from Friday, when EW did the 20 coolest pop culture heroes.

Why is that fictional villains are generally far more fascinating and intriguing than characters that are virtuous and decent? As an actor, I do know they’re a hell of a lot more fun to play.

Certainly you wouldn’t want to have anything to do with these people in the light of day…if they were real. They’re all fairly twisted pieces of work.

But in the safe confines of your precious home or a darkened cinema, you can just let your imagination run wild.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that fictional villains are bold, fearless and take what they want – with no questions asked and absolutely no prisoners involved.

(Makes sense. They’re usually wack jobs with no boundaries.)

So in that reckless and irrepressible spirit, here are my favourites from this list….

19. ALEX FORREST (GLENN CLOSE) – FATAL ATTRACTION

16. HANS GRUBER (ALAN RICKMAN) – DIE HARD

9. DRACULA

7. CATHERINE TRAMELL (SHARON STONE) – BASIC INSTINCT

5. ALEX DE LARGE (MALCOLM McDOWELL) – A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

4. THE JOKER

3. HANNIBAL LECTER (ANTHONY HOPKINS)

2. DARTH VADER – THE ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY

A French musicians guild says ACADEMY AWARD winning film composer MAURICE JARRE has died at the age of 84.

MAURICE JARRE is best known for writing the haunting song LARA’S THEME from the film DOCTOR ZHIVAGO.

SACEM head BERNARD MIYET cites MAURICE JARRE’S family Monday as saying the composer died in his CALIFORNIA villa.

He penned dozens of scores for many notable films, including RYAN’S DAUGHTER, GAMBIT, THE LAST TYCOON, THE YEAR OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY and ENEMIES: A LOVE STORY.

He won OSCARS for his music for DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and A PASSAGE TO INDIA and was nominated for an additional six ACADEMY AWARDS.

MAURICE JARRE was born in 1924 in LYON, FRANCE and studied music at the CONSERVATOIRE DE PARIS before starting his career composing scores for theatrical productions.

AS THE WEEKEND APPROACHES…

I’m very big on the Friday musical interlude concept. My dear sweet friend CRAIG KENNEDY does them regularly over at his own little corner of paradise LIVING IN CINEMA.

Unfortunately, I can’t always get to them. If there’s more pressing news, they fall by the wayside. Not to mention YouTube won’t always let them be imbedded easily. Or have the content remain on site after you’ve taken the trouble to construct a post around it.

But I will endeavour to do more. I’m an introspective individual. I’m constantly thinking about a variety of things. Most of which I have no desire to talk about here.

But sometimes a song runs through your mind for days on end. There’s generally a reason for that when it happens.

Like THE DOORS’ HELLO, I LOVE YOU.

Do you think you’ll be the guy
Who’ll make the queen of the angels sigh…?

Some things never change…

*Yawns. Shakes blonde mane.*

Whatever…

How about a little PJ HARVEY? Maybe that’ll soothe your soul. Possibly save it. Or something.

Have a lovely weekend, kids. I’ll be by tomorrow.

Until then, be careful as mice. It’s a big bad world out there…and temptation is always just around the corner.

Take it away, POLLY JEAN…

FROM VARIETY

DAVID MAMET will make his BROADWAY directorial debut next season with the world premiere of his new play RACE.

In NEW YORK, DAVID MAMET has previously helmed productions of his plays OLEANNA and THE CRYPTOGRAM. Both ran off Broadway.

RACE will be the second new MAMET play to bow on BROADWAY in two years, following the early 2008 opening of NOVEMBER.

Plot details remain sketchy, with producers saying only that the subject matter of the show is self evident in the title.

A spate of MAMET revivals have hit THE GREAT WHITE WAY in recent years, including productions of GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, AMERICAN BUFFALO and SPEED THE PLOW.

No cast for RACE has yet been announced. Previews begin NOVEMBER 21 ahead of a DECEMBER 10 opening at a theatre to be determined.
