THE ELEMENTS OF BEAUTY

PEOPLE has been compiling an annual list of the most beautiful men and women for some time now. I pay so little attention to it that I wasn’t even cognizant of the fact that their yearly roster had gone up from 50 to 100.

I’m positive that everyone has their own particular take on this – and here is mine. In many cases, it’s good PR and nothing more.

How do you define beauty?

I’m sure that it varies greatly depending on the person. However, I don’t find many of their chosen subjects beautiful. I didn’t when there were 50 of them and I don’t now.

I mean no disrespect to any of these individuals. Quite a few of them (including this year) are easy on the eyes. But easy on the eyes does NOT constitute beauty.

What I’m trying to say is: there are degrees.

There’s cute. There’s pleasant/nice looking. There’s attractive. There’s good looking. There’s sexy. There’s gorgeous. Or any connection or combination that you can put together from these adjectives. Except that I don’t think anything else goes with cute. If you could pair another scintillating quality with cute, then the person wouldn’t be at that particular level any more.

But then there’s flat out perfection.

CLASSIC BEAUTY.

If this woman walked past you in the street wearing a potato sack – with wet hair and absolutely no makeup on – you’d still think she was incredible looking. (I guess the equivalent for a guy would be wearing track pants and needing a good haircut and a shave.)

In my opinion, individuals that are spectacularly beautiful that are NOT on this year’s list are:

ANN MARGRET
ISABELLE ADJANI
KIM BASINGER
JULIE CHRISTIE
FAYE DUNAWAY
AVA GARDNER
CARY GRANT
RITA HAYWORTH
VIVIEN LEIGH
SOPHIA LOREN
LENA OLIN
LAURENCE OLIVIER
ROBERT REDFORD
ELIZABETH TAYLOR
CATHERINE ZETA JONES

With those criteria in mind, these are the only subjects on PEOPLE’S 2008 list that I think are truly beautiful:

CHRISTINA APPLEGATE
GEORGE CLOONEY
JOHNNY DEPP
CHRISTINA HENDRICKS
IMAN
ANGELINA JOLIE
NORAH JONES
NICOLE KIDMAN
JULIANNE MOORE
BRAD PITT
RENE RUSSO
SARAH SILVERMAN
MENA SUVARI
RAQUEL WELCH
VANESSA WILLIAMS

As far as I know, you can’t find the whole list of 100 anywhere on the net. You have to buy the magazine to see it in its entirety. But you can access a preview by going here

I’d be very interested in other people’s opinions in regards to this…

    m. uh i can’t give my ‘pop crush’ list too embarrassing… ๐Ÿ˜‰

a list that truly different than the fhm/maxim etc. thank god or whomever…

anyway one of the things that bothers me about a lot of these lists. is that it? doesn’t seem anything else matters as long as your generically hot.

and the sad part about is it are the ones that really don’t care are well..the adults and people wonder why kids are so f**ked up. ha ha..

and if someone has more to offer to than generic ‘hotness’. well that’s all they’ll get reduced to…

and the funny thing is that most of the people drooling don’t have that ‘ultra hot’ thing going for themselves. arrgh…oh yes adults. the usual..

i’m if via luck or hard work a female/male has gadizillions going for them in the talent category or have a cool personality. awesome

but too many ‘hot’ lists seem to mostly have people that man trait is they won a genetic lottery. somehow i can’t get obsessed over that. but most aren’t bothered. yay adults are going it for the kids…

anyway m. yeah scarlett j. is easy on eyes…but i’m not crushed out on her. (the only film i’ve seen her in was match point.and she didn’t wow me. and i know little about her personality/persona. so uh no…)

and on the norah jones in my blueberry nights this best a singer/person with media profile that’s not an actor has done in a film. impressive….well for a debut from a non actor…

i think she was the best waitress bits….

uh i have no interest in her music (uh do i lose point for typing that. ha ha…)

i don’y know about ‘striking’ m. but there was some segment in ‘blueberry’ where i said she/her character has a good heart. (yeah i’m insane) and it would be the coolest thing to talk to her/someone that cared that much….(despite how ‘confused’ she seemed. the all knowing person in a movie she wasn’t..)

and maybe that beats being ‘hot’. unless you get to have sex with her. ha ha… ๐Ÿ˜‰

where the losers at ????? ๐Ÿ˜‰

You’re SO funny, glim. You possess a truly great uniqueness when it comes to perspective. The world needs more like you.

There are so many little details and points that you catch that no one else could possibly retain. That’s one of the most interesting things you come up with.

You don’t have to tell me who makes your crush list. If that’s privileged info, I do respect that. You don’t ever have to open up about it.

Well, if the media was genuinely doing its job and was reporting on artistic events and personalities in a way that wasn’t silly, condescending or degrading…I don’t mean to suggest that everyone writing for a popular publication does that. But I do see a lot of it. It all gets reduced to the lowest common denominator. That’s really horrifically sad.

Are you switching gears, glim? I thought you liked Scarlett…

I haven’t seen MBN yet (still waiting for it…) ) so I can’t comment on NORAH JONES’ acting skills. But I do think she’s gorgeous and an awesome musician. No, you don’t lose points for not listening to – or buying – her stuff. I don’t think any less of you for that, glim.

    You’re still lovely and amazing…

Are you switching gears, glim? I thought you liked Scarlettโ€ฆ

hmm not really switching gears just sort of admitting the embarrassing truth. even more embarrassing because the couple i wrote something that may have made it seem like it did. was caused not going back checking what i wrote…either a word got added or wasn’t deleted that could have caused the confusion…

or the time i was joking (and pretty straight faced/friendly at that) when i asked you (words similiar to) when will i get over my crush on scarlett.

remember when i said i didn’t have a crush on scarlett. you said i didn’t have a crush *yet* ha ha.. uh my attempt at humor..

but remember m. if i really have crush on someone with a media profile. uh i at this point wouldn’t want to uh say who that person was.

so if i had a crush on scarlett/she wouldn’t have been mentioned. ๐Ÿ™‚

just more comfusion via the geek. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    That’s fine, glim.
