I am a huge fan of SANDRA BERNHARD.

I possess no positive or charitable feelings towards Sarah Palin whatsoever.

This entire situation is terribly unfortunate.

But sometimes you have to take it to the wall in order to get your point across…

SANDRA BERNHARD said the decision by a women’s shelter to cut her act from its annual benefit was based on a misleading account of what she said about Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

The actor/comedian, in criticizing Governor Palin for opposing abortion rights, challenged whether Ms. Palin would keep the baby if she became pregnant after being hypothetically violated by a group of black men in New York. Ms. Bernhard made the remarks last month during her one person show in Washington.

Rosie’s Place, a Boston shelter, announced Wednesday that Ms. Bernhard would not take part in the October 16 luncheon Funny Women…Serious Business.

Many women at the shelter have been victims of violence, said PR director Leemarie Mosca.

The shelter cut the comedian after Ms. Bernhard was quoted as referring to Governor Palin as being “gang raped by my big black brothers.”

SANDRA originally defended her routine, saying it was part of an extended scene from her one person performance piece about “women, racism, freedom and the extreme views of Governor Sarah Palin.”

In no way am I making any sort of joke about crimes against women. Quite the contrary. I’m speaking out about someone who doesn’t do enough to protect women. I think if you look at the real issues I’m addressing, my intent becomes clear. I am a die hard advocate for women’s rights and I fully support the work of Rosie’s Place.”

Yesterday SANDRA claimed in a statement that she never used the terms “rape” or “gang rape”, although she couldn’t recall her exact words. She said that she had been doing an improvisational act.

She told THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS she “addressed the issue if Sarah Palin had – God forbid – been violated, would she be willing to care for the baby?”

Ms. Bernhard is known for being personally outspoken and for having occasionally profane and outrageous material in her comedy. She only decided to set the record straight after “an innocent charity which does great work” became “collateral damage.”

  1. although not the internet the dropping of bernhard just makes it seems like the right and those lame ‘cultural watch dogs’ have won *again* 😦

  2. Some people don’t like the truth, glim.

Especially when it’s staring them right in the face….
