22 GREAT CHARACTER ACTORS

Film, theatre and television would not exist without character actors.

They’re the types of performers that you see over and over again in supporting parts. Quite often they display such virtuosity that you don’t even recognize them from role to role.

Contrary to popular belief, though, character actors can be gorgeous and they can also be major stars. It all comes down to the same common denominator. Do they transform completely from one part to the next? Do they seek challenging work instead of playing “classic leads” where they just look beautiful and get the girl/boy? If so, then they’re the real deal.

MERYL STREEP, JESSICA LANGE and MICHELLE PFEIFFER are all technically character actors.

But I came to praise the performers doing quality work who aren’t hugely famous.

Our awesome friends at EW have a terrific list of wonderful character actors. Among them are:

SARAH PAULSON – THE NOTORIOUS BETTIE PAGE, STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP, DOWN WITH LOVE

FRANCES FISHER – SEX & DEATH 101, FEMALE PERVERSIONS

PHILIP BAKER HALL – BOOGIE NIGHTS, HARD EIGHT, MAGNOLIA, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY

BOB BALABAN – PRINCE OF THE CITY, NO RESERVATIONS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND
