ACCORDING TO JULIE GRAY: THE GASP LIST

FROM THE HUFFINGTON POST

Everyone that reads CP regularly knows that I don’t feature anything here unless there is a significant amount of admiration on my part.

JULIE GRAY’S list is genuinely awe inspiring. But I made a few adjustments before I decided to publish it. I may as well be up front about it.

Everything that’s left are films that I adore unreservedly, like a great deal or have a certain amount of grudging respect for. Admittedly, there are a few that I haven’t seen.

But there are a number that stayed on for the simple reason that they still possess an astonishing amount of influence. I don’t connect with any of them. But whether I dig them or not is really rather irrelevant:

AVATAR
BLADE RUNNER
THE BREAKFAST CLUB
THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI
DR. STRANGELOVE
EASY RIDER
FARGO
THE FRENCH CONNECTION
THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY
GREASE
LA DOLCE VITA
MIDNIGHT COWBOY
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
PLATOON
RISKY BUSINESS
THE SIXTH SENSE
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
SUNSET BOULEVARD
TAXI DRIVER
TITANIC
WALL STREET

Then there are some motion pictures that I dispensed with entirely. I haven’t seen Dirty Harry, Finding Nemo, Scream, Shrek or Toy Story. The following don’t strike me as belonging on a list of essential films:

ADAPTATION
AMELIE
CHARIOTS OF FIRE
COOL HAND LUKE
DIRTY HARRY
FINDING NEMO
GROUNDHOG DAY
MARATHON MAN
AN OFFICER & A GENTLEMAN
RAMBO
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
SCREAM
SHREK
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
TOP GUN
TOY STORY
WHEN HARRY MET SALLY

That’s it. That’s all…

This is the new, improved, always evolving GASP list – the list of movies that you should have seen if you want to work (produce, write, direct, act) in the entertainment industry.

If you haven’t seen them and/or you don’t work in the industry, this is a fun (and growing) list for any movie fan.

Although it is simply not possible (or advisable) to have seen every movie ever made, the criteria for this list is that these are movies that have seminal, iconic or culturally significant performances, writing, direction or premises. These are the movies that set the bar, raised the standard or innovated something new and oft imitated.

Caveat: In order to keep this list manageable, foreign films and documentaries are not included.

It would be fun to add an ancillary foreign film GASP list. Many foreign films are the domain of cinephiles and nerds (like me) because they are not as accessible to the general public. The movies on the GASP list are movies that you should have seen. They’re available. They are on Netflix. They are televised from time to time. They are at every video store. Do you follow me?

For example, BLEU, my favourite of the Kieslowski trilogy, didn’t exactly play at the local cineplex. I also included La Dolce Vita because come on, I mean seriously…you’ve probably seen it.

And if you haven’t – GASP – add it to the list on your fridge that you forget to take to the video store.

If you go to the video store any more.
